A C T I V I T I E S O V E R V I E W
House of Europe Bratislava is non-profit, non-governmental, independent organisation promoting non-party political, cultural and educational goals aiming to European integration and co-operation, founded in December 1997 as a civic association.
Activities of the House of Europe Bratislava are concentrated into three priority areas. Several projects were implemented during seven years of the association’s existence. Among them, the following projects are the most significant:
1. ENLIGHTENMENT AND EDUCATION OF YOUTH
Youth Voting Europe – information and education project of German, Belgian, Italian and Slovak partners focused on enforcement of young people’s interest in public affairs, politics and European integration with the aim to strengthen the participation in the upcoming European Parliament elections (November 2003 - June 2004).
Our Common European Future – an multicultural educational youth summer gathering with participants from different EU candidate and member countries, focused on the upcoming EU Enlargement and future of the European integration from the viewpoint of young generation, with the aim to bring Europe closer to its citizens (July 2003).
Meeting Point: History – an international training course of youth workers from the EU member and associated countries, discussing the role and impact of history and culture to the process of European integration, with the mail goal to support activities aiming to peaceful coexistence without prejudices in Europe not only in the young generation (July 2002).
Before the EU Enlargement: Youth in the Country Side – a trilateral exchange project focused on life expectancies, opportunities, challenges and experiences of the youth living in the country side in today’s enlarging European Union on the example of Austria, Germany and Slovakia (April 2002 - May 2002).
Better Environment – Better Europe – a multicultural summer educational course for the youth from different European countries, discussing the issues of environmental protection, as one of the basic prerequisites of creation of united Europe providing quality life conditions for its citizens (July 2001).
European Youth Camps – Ways to European Citizenship – an international training of youth animators from the whole Europe. The objective is a mutual experience exchange, skills development and knowledge improvement through the preparation and implementation of international youth camps. The camps facilitate an improvement of the European awareness of young generation (May 2001).
Students Discover Europe – a project of cross-border co-operation between business academies in Vienna and Bratislava. Students, as multipliers in the educational process, share their experience of life in a different country and their knowledge of the European integration with their peers (September 1999 – June 2000).
Our Common Roots for Our Common Future – an international educational course for the young from the whole Europe. The course is devoted to the common historical roots, cultural values and their importance for peaceful coexistence and prosperous future of multicultural Europe (July 2000).
2. CIVIC DIPLOMACY
Slovak European Forum – a common national-wide platform of non-governmental organisations and institutions, whose programmes and activities are focused on the area of European integration, with the aim to exchange contacts, information, know how and experience from different projects with European dimension (since September 2001).
Visegrad Seen by European Journalists – Europe Seen by Visegrad Journalists – an international project for journalists of print media particularly, focused on the strengthening of mutual personal and professional contacts, intensification of cooperation and publication of articles improving the regional and European citizen awareness (November 2001 – August 2002).
Europe of Regions and European Union Enlargement – Central European conference on the encouragement of Visegrad countries integration ambitions by (pro)European non-governmental organizations and the strengthening of the mutual awareness promotion not only within the Visegrad region (November 2000).
Bells Festivities - Peace Message to the United Europe – cultural and social activities accompanying the completion of bells in the tower of St. Martin’s Cathedral. The bells were a gift of the five neighbouring countries and their capitals to the citizens of Bratislava, as an example of a successful co-operation between the church, administration, state and nongovernmental organizations co-ordinated by the House of Europe Bratislava (November 2000).
II. Bratislava European Conference “Possibilities of closer cooperation in Europe on the Example of Germany - Slovakia”, where more than 200 participants from Slovakia and the largest delegation of official representatives from Germany ever discussed the up-to-date questions of mutual cooperation. The conference encouraged the integration of the Slovak Republic into the European Union within the context of Helsinki summit (September 1999).
I. Bratislava European Conference „Possibilities and challenges of bilateral cooperation in Europe on the Example of Austria - Slovakia”, where close to 500 participants from both concerned countries reassessed the possibilities of a closer cooperation and suggested new activities in ten main public areas (November 1998).
3. LOCAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT, CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION
Fit for Enlargement - Fit for Europe – the series of training seminars and Partnership Days, supplemented by publishing of a practical handbook with the aim to enforce the implementation of the Accession Partnership and its chapters, transfer the efficient know-how on expected structural impacts of the EU Enlargement on local and regional self-governmental authorities in Slovakia (October 2003 - June 2004).
Our Cities in Our Europe – the series of 14 training, networking seminars, accompanied by a special competition for participating cities, with the aim to enhance the European awareness of the local self-government representatives, to prepare the municipalities for the upcoming EU Enlargement, to transfer of useful know-how on local EU information campaigns and to strengthen inter-sector co-operation and partnership (January 2003 - October 2003).
Europe for New Regions – the series of 8 information seminars devoted to the representatives of the new established regional self-government authorities (Upper Territorial Units) focused on the EU regional policy, role of regions in Europe and EU Cohesion and Structural Funds (January 2002 - November 2002).
Information Fighting Corruption I + II – the series of seminars and trainings for the local self-government representatives with the aim to improve their professional skills with a positive impact on the raising of public knowledge and legal awareness in the area of public resources treatment, as one of basic tools of transparency and fight against corruption (August 2000 - October 2002).
BRIDGE - Lifeline Danube – a multilateral project on the development of the Danube basin. The objective is to intensify the cross-border cooperation of specialists in the area of regional planning, local and regional development, architecture and transport, as well as the cooperation of municipal government representatives in Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary (January 1999 – June 2001).
